FAQs

Basic

▸ Does Midori require an internet connection?
No, Midori does not require an internet connection. Midori is 100% offline.
▸ How do I use the handwriting recognition?
Make sure that the button on the top left corner is "Dict" (or "J/E"). Then, tap the handwriting button on the top right corner on the iPhone or above the keyboard on the iPad.

▸ How do I look up a new word quickly?
▸ How do I use wildcard search / search backward?

There are simply two rules:

  • Use a question mark ("") to specify a single character.
  • Use an asterisk ("") to specify zero or more characters.

Examples:
  • finds words of length 3 that start with 日 and end with 語.
  • finds words of any length that start with 日 and end with 語.
  • finds words that end with 大学.
  • finds words that contain 好.
  • find words that start with みど and are followed by one or more characters.

One scenario that this might be helpful: say you see the word 展覧会 in a newspaper and want to look up its meaning. You know how to write 展 and 会 but not 覧. With wildcard search, you can just type in , and Midori will find the word for you.

▸ How do I look up words from other apps?
Use midori://search?text=...

For example,
  • midori://search?text=食べる
  • midori://search?text=taberu
  • midori://search?text=字
▸ How do I hear the pronunciation of a word or use high-quality voices?
To hear the pronunciation of a word, tap on a headword and tap "Speak."

Midori doesn't support bookmark syncing yet, but you can achieve the same results by the following steps:
